Although The Imitation of Christ was originally published anonymously in the early 15th century, Thomas á Kempis has long been credited as the author. Thomas á Kempis was a German-Dutch priest and subprior of the Monastery of Mount St. Agnes in Zwolle. He was also tasked with the formation of novices in his religious congregation. A prolific writer and copyist, he is best known for The Imitation of Christ, which emerged from the 14th century religious movement Modern Devotion (Devotio Moderna), of which he was a member.
